About this worksheet

Clock faces are drawn with all 60 minute marks, and the hour hand moves between numbers as it does on a real clock, so students learn to read its exact position.

Each sheet contains 8, 12 or 16 problems (your choice) and is generated at random. Press “New problems” as many times as you like; there is no limit and no account needed.

Worked example

123456789101112 :
  1. The short hand is the hour hand. It has passed the 6 but has not reached the 7, so the hour is 6.
  2. The long hand is the minute hand. It points at the 6. Count by fives from the 12: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. That is 30 minutes.
  3. Write the hour, a colon, then the minutes with two digits: 6:30.

Answer: 6:30

Teaching tips

  • Link 15, 30 and 45 minutes to the 3, 6 and 9 on the clock face.
  • Use a real clock with movable hands for the first few problems.
