Worked example
$49.67−$45.88
- Line up the decimal points and work in cents: $49.67 is 4967 cents and $45.88 is 4588 cents.
- Ones: 7 is smaller than 8, so borrow 1 from the tens: 17 − 8 = 9.
- Tens: 5 (the 6 became 5 after lending 1) is smaller than 8, so borrow 1 from the hundreds: 15 − 8 = 7.
- Hundreds: 8 (the 9 became 8 after lending 1) − 5 = 3.
- Thousands: 4 − 4 = 0.
- 379 cents = $3.79. Put the decimal point back two places from the right.
Answer: $3.79
