Worked example
5817
- 5 goes into 8 1 time: 1 × 5 = 5, and 8 − 5 = 3. Bring down the 1 to make 31.
- 5 goes into 31 6 times: 6 × 5 = 30, and 31 − 30 = 1. Bring down the 7 to make 17.
- 5 goes into 17 3 times: 3 × 5 = 15, and 17 − 15 = 2.
- Nothing is left to bring down, so the remainder is 2: the answer is 163 R2.
- Check: 163 × 5 + 2 = 817.
Answer: 163 R2
Teaching tips
- If the remainder is larger than the divisor, the quotient digit was too small.
