Worked example
83503
- 8 does not go into 3, so look at the first 2 digits.
- 8 goes into 35 4 times: 4 × 8 = 32, and 35 − 32 = 3. Bring down the 0 to make 30.
- 8 goes into 30 3 times: 3 × 8 = 24, and 30 − 24 = 6. Bring down the 3 to make 63.
- 8 goes into 63 7 times: 7 × 8 = 56, and 63 − 56 = 7.
- Nothing is left to bring down, so the remainder is 7: the answer is 437 R7.
- Check: 437 × 8 + 7 = 3503.
Answer: 437 R7
Teaching tips
- When a step cannot divide, write 0 in the quotient before bringing down the next digit.
