Two-step equations

  • Level: Grade 7
  • Free
  • Printable
  • Answer key included

Each equation has the form ax + b = c or ax − b = c. Students undo the addition or subtraction first, then the multiplication. All solutions are whole numbers. Two-step equations are a seventh-grade standard (Common Core 7.EE.B.4).

About this worksheet

Each sheet contains 10, 14 or 20 problems (your choice) and is generated at random. Press “New problems” as many times as you like; there is no limit and no account needed.

Worked example

8x − 7 = 113x =
  1. Undo the subtraction first: add 7 on both sides. 8x = 113 + 7 = 120.
  2. Undo the multiplication: divide both sides by 8. x = 120 ÷ 8 = 15.
  3. Check: 8 × 15 − 7 = 113.

Answer: 15

Teaching tips

  • Undo operations in the reverse order of the order of operations: first + or −, then × or ÷.
